Are My Tyres Roadworthy?

May 5, 2022

Tyres that are in poor condition can significantly reduce the handling and braking ability of your vehicle. This can be extremely dangerous, especially at high speeds or in wet or icy conditions. Worn-out tyres can also lead to decreased fuel efficiency as they create more resistance against the road surface and they can also cause damage to the wheel rims and suspension components over time. By regularly checking your tyres and ensuring that they are inflated to the proper pressure, you can help keep yourself and your vehicle safe on the road. So, how do you know if your tyres are roadworthy?

1. Check the tread depth

The minimum tread depth for a roadworthy tyre is 1.6mm, although it's generally advisable to replace tyres when they get down to 3mm. You can check tread depth using a special gauge or by doing the '20c test'. To do this, simply place a 20c coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre - if you can see the outer band of the coin, your tread depth is below the minimum limit, meaning that you need a new set of tyres fitting.

2. Check for signs of wear and tear

It's important to regularly check for signs of wear and tear on your tyres as they can affect the performance of your vehicle. Tyres that are in good condition will improve fuel economy and help to maintain your vehicle's longevity, while those that are worn or damaged can decrease fuel efficiency. Wear and tear are often caused by driving over kerbs, potholes or other road imperfections which you might not even notice or pay attention to, making it increasingly important to check them regularly (ideally once a month).

3. Check the tyre pressure

Under-inflated tyres can lead to premature wear and tear, while over-inflated tyres can make your car more difficult to control. It's important to check your tyre pressure regularly (at least once a month) and inflate them to the correct level, as specified in your car's handbook. You can find tyre pressure gauges at most service stations for free.

4. If you’re unsure, go to a professional

If you're unsure about anything regarding your tyres, it's always best to get them checked by a professional. They will be able to spot any problems and advise you on the best course of action.
