Tyre Care and Maintenance
July 6, 2022
Are you starting to notice your car is not driving as smoothly as it used to? It may be that your
tyres
need some attention. Keeping your car tyres well-maintained is crucial for vehicle performance and safety, and will also help you avoid trips to your tyre dealer. While you’ll still need to consult the professionals when you need a
wheel alignment or balance, there are things you can do yourself to keep your tyres performing well for as long as possible.

Inspect your tyres regularly
It’s important you inspect your tyres a few times a week. They can become damaged or even misaligned if you hit a speed bump, pothole, crack or rock. If you drive fast or brake hard, your tyres may experience premature wear. It’s also good to check your tyres for any small objects that may be stuck in the tread, as these can impact the grip. Frequent inspections will ensure you’re on top of any potential issues and can remedy them as soon as possible.
Rotate your tyres
As the tyres at the front of your vehicle carry more weight and perform more manoeuvring, they wear out more quickly than those at the rear. You can keep your tyres wearing evenly and maximise their lifespan by rotating them at least every 10,000 kilometres. If you see uneven wear, hear a hum when driving, travel long distances or transport heavy loads, you may need to rotate them more often.
Check your pressure
An under-inflated tyre is more likely to suffer damage and requires higher fuel consumption, while over-inflated tyres lead to uneven wear. Tyres naturally deflate 1-2 psi per month by themselves, and the deflation is higher if you travel long distances or do a lot of off-road driving. Tyre pressure is also more likely to drop during the winter months. If your car has a Tyre Pressure Monitor System, you’ll be able to stay on top of these changes, but if you drive an older car it’s important you check the user manual for the required air pressure and conduct regular maintenance.
